Mother and son share their journey with mental illness

When Nino, now 27, started college eight years ago, things quickly began spiraling out of control for him. “We knew something wasn’t right. We just didn’t know what it was”, said his mom, Frauka.

Nino and Frauka shared their family's journey with mental illness in our recently released video "The Many Faces of Buckelew Programs: Stories of Hope and Recovery". Nino, his mom and his sister Stephanie were present for the premiere of the film at our MarinScapes 2016 Opening Gala.

“We felt like movie stars! And it was so powerful to meet other people whose lives have been changed by Buckelew Programs,” said Frauka,”I want this film to show others that there is hope and help!”

We are deeply grateful to videographer and producer S. Kramer Herzog for donating the filming and production of our new video "The Many Faces of Buckelew Programs: Stories of Hope and Recovery".

In this video, seven courageous people share their personal stories of hope and recovery from mental health issues and addiction, and the difference that Buckelew Programs services have made in their lives.  

TeenScreen is a nationally-recognized program developed by Columbia University to identify risk factors associated with depression, anxiety, suicide, body image, trauma and alcohol and substance abuse in youth.

In Marin County, TeenScreen is offered by Family Service Agency of Marin, a division of Buckelew Programs. Our mental health professionals conduct voluntary screenings in school settings.The program has been growing each year and has recently expanded to middle schools in addition to high schools.

Through a recent agreement with Columbia, Stanford University has been given access and shared rights to the TeenScreen Program.

Starting September 7th, we will offer a new "Survivors of Suicide" support group for those who have lost someone to suicide. If suicide has touched you or impacted your life profoundly, no matter how long ago the suicide occurred, this group may be helpful to you.

Become a volunteer at our Suicide Prevention and Crisis Hotline. A new 6 week training session starts on September 13th. You too can help prevent suicide!

Our Sonoma Transitional Age Youth (TAY) Program helps young adults age 18-25 with mental health issues find housing and learn independent living skills. We need to raise additional funds to help our youth with rental deposits and every day necessities such as transportation, household goods, tuition and clothing.

Once again, our caring community came together at the beautiful rustic Escalle Winery in Larkspur this past June to enjoy breathtaking Marin landscape art and raise critical funds for Buckelew's mental health and addiction services.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to make this event a success!

This year's honoree was Dr. Marty Griffin, who helped preserve a landscape of hope through his efforts in saving the beauty of Marin and supporting mental health. Popular local TV host Doug McConnell helped us honor his longtime friend, and featured artist Christin Coy presented Marty with a framed print of her painting "Peaceful Afternoon, Bolinas Ridge and Lagoon".
