JaldrinStoryWhen Jaldrin arrived in California from the Philippines at just four years old, he absorbed everything around him like a sponge. Hardworking and energetic, his zest for pursuing many passions shaped him into the multi-faceted man he is today.

“I bring good energy everywhere I go,” Jaldrin says with a smile. “I like who I am and I love what I do.”

His remarkable adaptability and positive outlook have been essential for navigating the mental health challenges that began when he was sixteen.

“I battle depression, and my life has been difficult, but it’s okay because adversity has made me stronger,” Jaldrin shares. “Mental health isn’t easy, but I believe it gets better with hope.”

Jaldrin’s mental health journey led him to Buckelew’s Supported Housing program, where he has lived contentedly for nearly ten years. With the foundation of stable housing and a supportive community, Jaldrin is building a life that nurtures his many talents.

By day, he works at a gas station in Montecito Plaza, where he’s cultivated lasting relationships through the years by providing genuine customer service. “I love my job with a passion,” he says. “I like connecting with the public and serving our community.”

Beyond the workplace, Jaldrin is an artist, athlete, personal chef, and entrepreneur. His clothing line, Ember, features custom jeans and t-shirts. He creates music, dedicates time to his MMA practice, and revels in his role as the house chef. Jaldrin loves to prepare Filipino specialties like pork adobo and chicken curry.

“I really enjoy cooking for others because it makes me feel good when they enjoy the food. It makes me feel proud of my culture,” Jaldrin explains, his face lighting up.

Jaldrin appreciates the stability and sense of belonging Buckelew provides. From his base at Buckelew, he’s thriving: working, creating, cooking, training, and building meaningful relationships. His journey demonstrates the powerful impact of programs that recognize the whole person.

“I would recommend Buckelew,” he says. “Overall, it’s a great experience for people who are battling mental health.”

Jaldrin’s story illustrates what is possible when stable housing meets unwavering support. When asked what he would say to others facing mental health challenges, Jaldrin readily responds: “Stay strong and have faith because it gets better. Life gets better.”
