Jesus and Veronica

Jesus began drinking at eleven years old. By seventeen, alcohol had taken hold of his life in ways that would shape the next three decades — four DUIs, entanglement with the justice system, and a cycle he couldn’t seem to break on his own.

But this time was different. Entering a 90-day residential treatment program as part of a court order, Jesus arrived with something he hadn’t brought before: honesty.

“I knew from day one that I needed help,” he says. “I was tired of living the same cycle and wanted something different for my life.”

While Jesus was finding his footing, his sister Veronica had been searching for answers of her own. For years, she watched her brother struggle, feeling helpless as her efforts to find him support hit dead ends.

“I searched everywhere and felt helpless. I didn’t know where to turn anymore,” she recalls.

Then, through an online search, Veronica connected with a Substance Use Navigator (SUN) at Buckelew Programs. What followed was a lifeline — step-by-step guidance that included coordination with the hospital, help clearing barriers to services, and a referral to Orenda Detox that finally set Jesus on the path to treatment.

“Without the resources, compassion, and understanding of Buckelew Programs, my loved one would not be the person he is today,” Veronica says. “I will always be grateful.”

Jesus completed his 90-day program and hasn’t stopped since. He attends AA meetings, is enrolled in DUI classes, and stays connected through regular follow-ups with SUN. His family, once worn down by years of worry, is now his anchor.

“I love having my brother present and with us again,” Veronica says.

For Jesus, recovery is a daily commitment — and one he’s ready to keep.

“There’s still more work to do, but I’m ready for the next chapter. Every day reminds me how beautiful life can be when I’m surrounded by my family.”
