What We Do

Buckelew’s trained crisis counselors answer thousands of regional calls to the free, confidential 988 Lifeline each year. Whether you’re struggling with suicidal thoughts, substance use, or just need someone to talk to, our team is here with judgment-free support. Reach out for yourself or if you’re concerned about someone else—no matter the level of distress. You are not alone.

What to Expect When You Call 988

  1. You’ll hear a message that gives you service selection options.
  2. We’ll play some hold music while you are connected to a counselor with our Spanish-language, LGBTQI+ services, or your local 988 Lifeline contact center. For veterans, the phone will ring until a counselor can answer your call.
  3. A counselor will say hello and introduce themselves.
  4. Your skilled counselor will ask you if you are safe.
  5. After they ask about your safety, your counselor will listen to you, understand how your problem is affecting you, provide support, and share any resources that may be helpful.

  • If your counselor feels you are in immediate danger, they may discuss connecting you to local emergency response services.
I was really scared but decided to make the call. My counselor helped me to stop panicking and find ways to reach out to others and keep myself safe. It was definitely worth the call.
