We’re on a mission to end the stigma around mental health and suicide. Stigma can silence those who are struggling, making it harder to seek help, while open conversations and shared resources can save lives.
Buckelew delivers free evidence-based suicide prevention education to schools, workplaces, nonprofits, and other organizations. Our facilitators are trained in programs such as the SOS Curriculum for grades 6–12 and the Stanley-Brown Safety Plan, teaching the warning signs of depression and suicide and intervention skills.
With suicide rates rising, especially among youth, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ communities, spreading awareness of mental health resources is critical. Buckelew is tackling this through outreach efforts like promoting the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, producing PSA videos, and tabling at high-traffic community events to share information about mental health resources. You’ll see our team at major sporting events, fairs, and more.
Research shows that how we talk about suicide in the media can influence the health outcomes of vulnerable individuals and reduce the stigma that keeps people from seeking help. What is reported and how it is reported it–– including word choices––matter. If you’re a journalist or editor, please reach out. We can consult one-on-one or schedule a training with your staff.
