The age group most at risk of losing their life to suicide probably isn’t the one you expect.
While seniors comprise about 17% of the U.S. population, they account for 22% of fatal suicides. Even as suicide rates have declined among youth, rates among older adults rose significantly in 2022, according to the latest CDC data. Men aged 75 and older face the highest risk.
Suicide among seniors is a growing public health crisis—but it’s also a preventable tragedy.
Watch this video to learn how the national 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, launched in 2022, can provide help and hope to seniors. Meet 988 counselors like Jim, a retiree and 988 volunteer who understands the loneliness, depression and anxiety many seniors experience. And learn what happens when you call 988.
What You Can Do
Buckelew Programs, a Bay Area nonprofit operating one of California’s 12 call centers within the national 988 network, is working tirelessly to raise awareness among older adults about 988, and we need your help. Despite being one of the highest risk groups for completed suicide, seniors make up less than 2% of 988 callers.
Please help raise awareness by watching and sharing this video with the older adults in your life. And learn the warning signs of suicide here.
If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts or a mental health crisis, call or text 988 now. Or chat online at 988lifeline.org. 988 is free, confidential and always available 24/7.
Buckelew 988 Outreach is possible through a generous grant from the Lindskog Foundation.
