988: A Lifeline for Young People in Crisis

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people ages 10 to 24. If you’re in that age group, you might feel like your struggles with depression or anxiety are often overlooked and dismissed as hormones or teen angst. But please know you are not alone.

Caring, compassionate, and confidential support is just three numbers away – 988.

“I think it’s so brave and strong for someone to call in and talk about how they are really feeling,” says Kenyon Jordan, suicide prevention volunteer and training coordinator with Buckelew Programs. “I wish when I was younger 988 was an option because it may have made things easier for me when I was struggling.”

Yet, many vulnerable young people resist calling or texting the national 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline – or don’t even know it exists. They might think their problems aren’t “big enough,” or they’ve heard false rumors that a call to 988 triggers police involvement.

According to a NAMI poll, 82% of Americans are unfamiliar with 988.

Buckelew Programs, a Bay Area nonprofit operating one of California’s 12 call centers, believes we can change that.

Watch this video to learn how the Lifeline, launched in 2022, provides help and hope to today’s youth. Meet 988 counselors like Kenyon and Shriya, and find out exactly what happens when you call or text 988.
